McCrae Lake August 2025
Four years running and once again the August long weekend saw the okaywego Homies hanging out, enjoying sunsets and star gazing along the cliffside of the eagles nest campsite on McCrae Lake.
Accessible by a short hike or paddle, we have been fortunate enough over the past four years to successfully secure the cliffside for our long weekend adventures. The beautiful backdrop and western exposure provides plenty of opportunity for fun and amazing evening sunsets. The eagles nest area is situated at the top of an amazing lakeside climbing crag, featuring sport climbing routes ranging from 5.8's - 5.12’s. Top side accessible anchors also provide the opportunity to setup top rope routes, making the crag accessible for many levels of climbers. A large peninsula, better known as the swimming rock, mirrors the crag and is a great spot for hanging out, watching some climbs and cooling off in the hot summer sun. Accessible by water, we are always sure to take a paddle over to the lake’s jumping rocks. Ranging from approximately 20-60 feet tall, there is an opportunity for everyone to test their limits. With many backcountry campsites around the lake there is plenty of freedom to get away, ground yourself and reconnect with nature.
Swinging in hammocks, the crackle of the fire in the background, just able to make out the dim lit smiles of close friends sharing stories, we continued to build and foster our relationships. But the okaywego mentality is much more than just fostering what already exists. It’s about taking chances, stepping into the unknown and being open to whatever possibilities are presented. It is in these moments that we truly begin to understand who we are and what the world has to offer.
Some notable moments of connecting with strangers (Homies you haven’t met yet) included a late night welcoming with food and wine from new friends visiting from France, a gaggle of McCrae Lake long weekend okaywego rookies ready for adventure and even a back flip gainer clinic at the jumping rocks and rope swing!
Whether it’s the first time meeting on the trail or recognizing returning climbers at the crag there is always something special about sharing a moment or two with a fellow adventurer.
Where will your next adventure lead you?
